[Action/Private thought]

[Wataru couldn't sleep. Part of it was, admittedly, Savyna's disappearance. He was worried about her, of course, and there wasn't really much he could do about it.

The other part was... well, everyone else. His friends, from Vision and earth, and most importantly, his mother. When was the last time he had seen her? Only briefly, when he had walked down the Corridor of Light to visit her from Vision. It was hardly any time at all. And she had looked so thin then...

And then there was the matter of his friends in Vision. Kee Keema and Meena would surely worry about him, if they'd known what happened. And his journey to meet the Goddess of Fate - what would happen when he returned? Halnera was in effect, and the last Traveler to reach the Tower would be sacrificed. Two minus one equals one. Mitsuru had already been ahead of him, even before he ended up in the Pokémon world. Was he now doomed? Had Mitsuru been able to reach the tower unhindered, leaving him as the only one left remaining? All because somewhere in his heart, there was a world that demanded sacrifices.

With these thoughts troubling him, Wataru sits by a window in the hallway of the inn, staring out at the stars.]

[When Wataru turns on the Gear, he looks a little uncertain. He doesn't really know if anyone is even awake at this hour, nor if anyone would bother answering even if they were, but... he wants to know anyway.]

Does anyone know... what would make a goddess or a god need a sacrifice?

[Oh, but there is someone else awake at this hour, another person with many things on his mind.]

What an unusual question for someone so young to ask.

[ Kisa can't sleep either, and so she's wandering the halls-- spotting Wataru and edging curiously closer until she hears his question. ]

... Sacrifice?

[ just thinking about the one god in her life has her turning just a little pale. What had been sacrificed to Akito had been decided from a time before Kisa's birth. ]

...You're right. It is kind of a strange question, huh?

K-Kisa!

[He nearly falls from his seat in surprise. He hadn't expected her to be up at this hour.

...And it sounds like she heard him, too.]

You're still awake?

[ just nodding, even if she squeaked a little at his response. ]

I-I'm sorry... I didn't mean to surprise you.

No, it's okay. I just wasn't expecting you to still be awake.

Perhaps it is, but the strangest questions often turn out to be asked for only the best of reasons.

And one who refrains from asking receives no answers and in turn learns very little. However, the question in this case is not one that is easily answered.

So... you don't know the answer, either?

I never said that. The problem is that there are many possible answers and few ways to determine which one is right.

Then what are some of the possible answers?

... I couldn't sleep.

[ Kisa's also been kind of bad at it ever since she woke up after a week of doing just that. ]

The god or goddess could be cruel, for example. They could just want a sacrifice because. Or their power could actually require a sacrifice to work. Or the sacrifice is supposed to be a payment of sorts.

It all depends on the situation and the deity in question.

Me, neither.

[With a small sigh, he sits back in his seat.]

I couldn't think of anything else to do, so I came out here... what about you?

[Wataru sits in silence for a moment after that, taking in his words. Those had already occurred to him, but it was a little alarming somehow to have another person who didn't know anything about it come to the same conclusion.]

...What would you think if the goddess was really powerful - strong enough to change fate, even - but she still needed to sacrifice people to protect the world?

[What an interesting boy, really. Hirato looks at him over the rim of his glasses before answering:]

...I would guess that the sacrifice could be the price the world must pay for her protection.

[He nods, his expression falling.]

But still... whoever thought of that must be pretty twisted. Taking people away from their loved ones like that...

Sac..ri...fice?

[Kirby does not compute.]

A very cruel way to make someone pay the price, yes. Nonetheless, the price must be paid for the greater good. After all, no one can gain anything without giving something away in turn.

[A beat.]

But this is a terribly depressing subject, wouldn't you say?

_{[... ooh, THAT grabs her attention. But not in a pleasant way... And it's a rattling enough question that she doesn't feel too keen on ignoring it and going to bed. She doubts she'd sleeps soundly.]}

Anything having to do with those things always comes with some nasty piece of fine print attached.

If you're thinking of trying something funny, don't.

Why are you so curious?

I don't think there are even any gods left in modern times. At least not as I knew them.

I know that many gods and goddesses in myths wanted sacrifices as payment for doing something for their followers.

[Haseo was on his way to the lobby of the inn when he heard that question. He notices Wataru near a window and he approaches him.]

... What kind of question is that?

Yeah. Like... when you have to give up something for something else.
